For example, word processing software such as Microsoft Word or WordPerfect must know what type of printer it will be "talking to," where it will be located on the hard disk or server, where the spell-checking software will reside, etc.

A new modem or hard disk or other piece of equipment must know where it sits, what "port" and "interrupt" it will occupy, etc. Even though some software claims to install these things automatically, they still benefit from being tweaked to reduce the chance for a system lock-up and to improve overall functioning.
